What is the formal charge on the underlined element in NCl3?

The total positive and negative charge of a neutral compound is equal to zero. Rough rule of thumb, elements on the right side of the periodic table ends up with negative charge. Each of the three Cl atoms will have a formal charge of -1. This means that N would have a formal charge of +3.
