How to get hardened carmel out of a gl dish?

i melted carmel and the recipe said to use a double boiler but i don't have one so i put a gl bowl over a pot of simmering water and used that instead. is there any way to clean the carmel off? it wont come off!! and if my mom comes home and sees a bowl of carmel in the sink she will freak out!! so please help :) thanks so much!!
