Volunteering as a Nurse in Sri Lanka?

myself and two friends qualify as nurses in august and want to volunteer in sri lanka for 2-4 weeks, but we don't want to have these volunteer packages and spend lots of money because accommodation and food is included... we were wondering if its possible to do off your own back? thanks
