Symbolic redemption for actual wrong?

Hello! I have heard some claims that the Bible should not be taken literally, and some that it should. I guess my question is this: why should the Bible not be taken literally if there is real, actual wrong in the world? To me, if the Bible were to be "correct" it would have to be taken literally to correspond to the literal sin and suffering that occurs every day.
